Informal meditation can take place at any time, and requires no special equipment. The practice is simply to bring awareness to the activity of the moment. It is known as informal meditation because it is practiced throughout the day in everyday activities. Open hearted compassion for the activity at hand manifests as taking care of conversations, friendships, belongings, and the environment, to name just a few.
The formal practice of awareness that takes place while in a traditional posture, usually on a meditation cushion or meditation chair, and ideally with a community of practitioners. This formal practice is a timed and planned activity. The time and place are arranged so that there is little distraction. The open hearted compassion for the activity at hand manifests as taking care of the posture.
